Multifunctional Rooms for Our Multitasking Lives!

I don’t know about you, but if I want to get everything done, I’ve got to multitask, doing two, sometimes even three things at once.  My lighting plan takes this into account.  My kitchen, for example, is more than just a place for cooking.  We eat at the bar, do homework, pay bills, and even entertain in that space!  By lighting in layers, we are allowed the flexibility we need to get whatever task we are working on done with just the right about of light.  LED under cabinet lights, mini-pendants, recessed lighting and wall sconces combine to create a layered lighting scheme that allow us to add light when we need it and turn it off when we don’t.  Need help deciding how to layer the light in your space?  Give us a call at 541-318-1940!

Lighting Your Bathroom

We get lots of questions about how to light a bathroom.  Should you mount the fixture with the lights going up or down?  Should I use single wall sconces or a standard bath vanity?  The list goes on and on. When it comes to lighting, the bathroom is often the least considered, but as it becomes more and more of a refuge from daily life (I LOVE MY BUBBLE BATH!), lighting needs to be more than just a ceiling fixture or a vanity fixture. All lighting should be layered and designed to fit how you are going to use the space.  Remember you will be using this area for a variety of tasks, such as putting on make-up or shaving.  Recessed lighting was not designed for this task.  It creates shadows making grooming more difficult.  Mounting fixtures on either side of the mirror will provide even lighting across your face, making it easier to complete your task to your satisfaction.  Sometimes, however, this can be impractical.  If this is the case for you, then a standard vanity can be used.  The vanity light should be 75 to 80 inches above the floor and at lease 24 inches long so that the light will wash evenly over your face. The choice to place the fixture with the lights going up or down is really up to you.  When they point up, you will get more ambient lighting, since the light will be bouncing off the ceiling before it comes back down.  It will be more spread out.  If you choose to have them pointed down, you may get shadowing, but you will have more direct lighting to accomplish your tasks.
